In another effort to protect unborn babies, Republicans are unveiling their own retroactive extension of the tax credit for the length of a woman’s pregnancy.
The Provide for Life Act aims to overhaul the federal government’s family care system and is led by Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa. A cornerstone of the new law is that parents will be given retroactive credit for unborn children.
The legislation, confirmed to DailyMail.com, would increase the refundable child tax credit from the current $2,000 per dependent to $3,500 for children under six, and $4,500 for children between six and 17. Parents would have to be employed to receive the credit under Republican law.
Under the package proposed by Hinson, parents would be eligible to claim the tax credit for the previous year while pregnant — and also access the regular tax credit for the current year after their child is born.

The package would also aim to address maternity and paternity leave in the US, which critics say lags far behind other developed countries. The proposal would allow parents to draw on their Social Security benefits early to fund up to three months of paid parental leave.
States would also receive incentives under the package to implement guidelines for fathers contributing to women’s pregnancy costs.
The bill comes as Republicans continue to push a pro-life agenda after the Supreme Court last year overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion at the federal level half a century ago.
Last June’s Dobbs decision reversed that decision, sending abortion laws back to the states to decide. More than a dozen states had so-called “trigger laws,” which banned abortion after the Supreme Court ruling was handed down in 2022.
Some GOP lawmakers have been open about placing federal-level restrictions on abortion, such as limiting the procedure to the first six weeks of pregnancy.

Hinson told Fox News that her legislation “sets the policy course for a culture of living in America.”
The goal, Hinson added, is to enable families of all socioeconomic statuses to carry their pregnancies to term and help them care for those children.
However, including a work requirement for the expanded tax credit could be a nonstarter for Democrats.
Child discount free of work requirements was very popular during the coronavirus pandemic. Democrats tried, and failed, to make it permanent.
