Paramount+ in talks with Robert De Niro to star in TV series Bobby Meritorious

Robert De Niro is in negotiations with Paramount+ to star in and produce a crime drama for the streaming service Bobby Meritorious.

The series is set in the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where the two-time Oscar winner plays the role of Avery “The Sage” Accomando.

Accomando is an informant in the firm’s biggest case who is “on the verge of tearing apart this storied institution,” according to a studio synopsis.

“Only one man can stop him, a legendary ex-cop turned prosecutor affectionately known as Bobby Meritorious,” the synopsis continued. “The battle between these two giants is a battle for justice itself.”

The 79-year-old actor, according to deadlinewould be working on the crime drama with Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, who also serves as an executive producer on the show.

Paramount Television Studios promised to develop the series after making a bid for the rights to Bharara’s book Doing Justice: A Prosecutor’s Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law.

Billy Ray, who wrote and directed The Comey Rule for Showtime, will write and produce the upcoming series.

De Niro will be an executive producer with his Tribeca Productions partner Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh.

It is the second streaming project the legendary actor has been linked to recently as he is expected to appear in the Netflix series Zero Day.

The busy actor also has a number of upcoming projects slated to hit the silver screen, such as Killers of the Flower Moon, which will mark his 10th project with Martin Scorsese; and Wise Guys for revered director Barry Levinson.

He also appears in Tony Goldwyn’s upcoming comedy Inappropriate Behavior and with a cast that includes Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson and Whoopi Goldberg.

The upcoming series for the streamer comes after the successful first season of the Sylvester Stallone crime drama Tulsa King, which was renewed in November, weeks after its debut.

Paramount Television Studios has committed to developing the series after winning a bid for the rights to Bharara’s book Doing Justice: A Prosecutor’s Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law
