Tragedy as woman’s body found after she disappeared off Palm Cove jetty – as an urgent search is launched for another woman who jumped into Ipswich’s Bremer River

A woman’s body has been recovered from the water at the jetty of a popular tourist town as a desperate search continues for another woman who jumped into a river.

A search began in the early hours of Friday for the first woman in the Far North Queensland town of Palm Cove, about 25km north of Cairns.

Police were called to the Palm Cove Jetty about 2:30 a.m. when a woman went into the water but did not resurface.

No details are known about the circumstances at this time, a police spokeswoman said.

Water police, surf lifesavers and local police were involved in the search. About 7am on Friday, volunteers from Surf Life Saving Queensland found the body around the northern headland near Buchans Point Beach.

In a statement, police said the investigation was ongoing but the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Meanwhile, an urgent search is on for a woman who jumped into the Bremer River near Ipswich and failed to resurface.

Emergency services responded around 5.45am on Friday to reports that a woman had entered the river but was not seen again.

Police have closed one lane of the David Trumpy Bridge as they search for the woman.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid delays.
