It is said that Barrow’s players will receive a bigger bonus if they lose their Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea than if they win.

The Second Division side travel to Stamford Bridge on September 24 for the third round of the competition and will be looking to surprise the Blues.

According to the Telegraph Barrow players were given an incentive to underperform during the match, raising questions about the integrity of the Carabao Cup.

Barrow pays its players £1,000 if they lose in West London and just £250 if they pull off a huge upset.

According to the same medium, the club has refused to comment. According to them, there are errors in the bonus document that will be corrected.

The competition’s organisers, the English Football League, also declined to comment. However, they are said to be unimpressed by Barrow’s bonus scheme.

There are no claims that Barrow’s bonus system is in breach of regulations, but the EFL have asked for an explanation as this is the first time they have faced such an issue.

It is believed the Bluebirds have contacted the EFL and assured them they will change their bonus system.

Bonuses must be agreed between the club and the players before the start of the season, with the EFL then notified of the details.
