Owen Hargreaves highlights Man United’s ‘biggest issue of the season’ so far after 1-1 draw with FC Twente – as Red Devils face daunting run

Owen Hargreaves believes Manchester United ‘must find a way to get results’ given the tough run of fixtures they face after a disappointing start to their Europa League campaign.

The Red Devils drew 1-1 against FC Twente on Wednesday evening, after the Dutch team hit back through Sam Lammers following Christian Eriksen’s opening goal.

Erik ten Hag’s team have won three of their first seven games of the season, including against Fulham and Southampton in the Premier League, and a 7-0 win over League One club Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Hargreaves expressed his concerns after the draw against FC Twente at Old Trafford, as Man United failed to win despite being the big favourites.

“That’s the biggest problem so far this season, they haven’t beaten anyone,” Hargreaves said on TNT Sports.

‘There was the game against Liverpool (3-0 defeat). Against Crystal Palace (0-0 draw on Saturday) they probably should have won. The first half was exceptional, but in the end, if it wasn’t for a [Andre] Onana makes a double save, they could have lost that one too.

‘This will be a bit of a setback because the season has gone a bit like this: they had control of the game but couldn’t finish it off.

‘I think that’s what makes a team like Twente grow in confidence, be positive and ultimately leave Old Trafford with a point. They persevered, they went for it and got what they deserved.’

The Red Devils play an important match in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, after which they play a tough away match in the Europa League against Portuguese powerhouse Porto.

Their next seven matches also include games against Aston Villa, Brentford, West Ham and Chelsea in the Premier League.

Man United also face a reunion with former manager Jose Mourinho and his Fenerbahce team in the Europa League.

Hargreaves believes Manchester United will have to find solutions to a series of difficult matches.

‘Those games are incredibly difficult because all those teams can play and there are also some very tough away games.

‘When you play for a team like Man United you have to get the best out of yourself.

“They’ve done it in a couple of one-off games when they’ve come up against it, but they’re going to be tested in their next seven games. They’ve got to find solutions.

‘Erik sticks his neck out every time and he is honest.

“But the fact is, they need results. If you’re a top team, that’s what this business is all about: getting results.”
