Owen Farrell could be banned for the start of England’s Six Nations campaign if found guilty of a dangerous tackle.

Saracens No 10 are awaiting the dating commissioner’s report after his shoulder collided with the chin of Gloucester’s Jack Clement on Friday night.

Referee Karl Dickson did not take any action during the game because the TMO was deemed to have intervened too long after the incident.

However, Farrell could face retrospective action, with the RFU expected to deliver its official disciplinary update tomorrow.

After being banned for five weeks for trespassing in 2020, Farrell’s disciplinary record could count against him if he is charged.

There are four weeks to go until England’s first Six Nations game against Scotland, meaning Farrell would be free to play if the incident is deemed worthy of a two-week ban. Farrell has been number 10 in form in the Premiership this season, although both Marcus Smith and George Ford are set to return from injury this month.

Steve Borthwick will name his first England squad for the Six Nations on January 16, and he is only allowed to make five changes to the existing 45-man EPS squad. The England head coach, who was in Gloucester on Friday to see Farrell kick the winner, received enthusiastic praise from his predecessor, Eddie Jones, yesterday.

Jones told The Guardian: ‘Steve Borthwick was there until 2020. Then he wanted his own career. One of my jobs was to make England win again, which I did, and also to produce the next head coach. So I look back with satisfaction because Steve will do a very good job. It is outstanding.

Since being sacked last month, Jones has been in talks with Australia about a coaching role in time for this year’s World Cup. He revealed: ‘I have a couple of good options. I’m getting to the stage of talking about contracts, so I’ll make a decision in the next two weeks.
