Overwatch 2’s new pansexual hero may have revealed another queer character

When Blizzard revealed that the latest support hero is coming Overexpected 2, Lifeweaver, the developer noted that the character is openly pansexual and players will see that “reflected in his voice lines, conversations, and other content.” Players can already see that, almost a week before Lifeweaver’s release, in early gameplay previews. And one of the Thai hero’s voice lines may reveal something about another hero, Baptiste, having a very flirty conversation with Lifeweaver.

On the Overwatch subredditfans took note of a lobbying conversation between Lifeweaver and Baptiste, in which the following fling takes place.

Life weaver: I have a reservation at a fantastic restaurant, but I’m not sure who to invite…

Baptiste: I know a man!

Life weaver: Does he happen to be a handsome ex-mercenary from the Caribbean?

Baptiste: [chuckling] He just might be!

Now a skeptic might think, “Hey, maybe Baptiste is just hungry.” And maybe he is. But the delivery between the two — reinforced by Lifeweaver’s obvious flirtation — seems to support a theory Overwatch players have had since learning of Baptiste’s former partner in Talon, a Samoan tank man named Mauga, and their close relationship. It also seems that the writer behind part of Baptiste’s lore meant that Baptiste and Mauga would have had some sort of romantic relationship.

In 2019, Blizzard released the Overwatch short story ‘What You Left Behind’. In it, author Alyssa Wong told a story of an unwelcome reunion for Baptiste: his former partners in the terror organization Talon, Mauga and Nguyen, had tracked him down after four years in Baptiste’s homeland of Haiti. The tension in that story is high, and not just because Mauga was able to easily overpower Baptiste to get what he wanted – which was for Baptiste to join the ex-Talon gang on a classic “just one more job” mission.

That short story also came with this artwork by Baptiste and Mauga:

Wong later said they were “obsessed with two (2) kinds of fictional relationships: ‘you were never good to me, but I loved you more than anything’, and ‘you were the best thing that ever happened to me, and I destroyed that with my own hands (possibly on purpose).’” And in response to a fan pointing to the relationship between Baptiste and Mauga as possibly fitting that mold, Wong replied, “That’s how I wrote them!” Wong also added a winking emoji, presumably to emphasize their intentions.

And to make it even clearer, here’s the author of Baptiste’s primary source of knowledge about shipping those characters.
