Piers Morgan has launched into a blistering rant over the Women’s World Cup’s first openly trans and non-binary player, asking why they are playing in the tournament if they don’t identify as a woman.
Canadian midfielder Quinn made history by taking the field against Nigeria on Friday and will play against Australia on July 31.
The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes, but was unable to help the team find a breakthrough as their campaign got off to a frustrating start with a goalless draw.
Quinn, who was born as a biological female, came out as non-binary and trans in 2020, dropping their former first name and now identifies with the pronouns they and them.
Quinn is becoming accustomed to creating history after becoming the first out trans and non-binary athlete to compete at the Tokyo Olympics.

Quinn, who plays for Canada, came out as non-binary and trans in 2020 – and also made history when they competed in the 2022 Olympics
That proved to be a triumphant tournament for Canada, as Quinn’s team secured Olympic gold.
‘Being a transgender athlete, it was difficult to see my place in sports and see that I belong,’ Quinn told Streets of Toronto before travelling to this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
‘And the same goes for cisgender girls who are navigating their experience; we have a male-dominated sports culture in North America and they deserve to see they have a place in this sport.
‘It’s so important for young soccer players to have role models in sport. Seeing the women’s national team and fortunately being able to interact with some of them was hugely important for me in understanding that there was a pathway for me.’
However, not everyone is enthusiastic about Quinn’s historic moment at the World Cup – including Morgan, who is famous for his verbal battles with trans activists.
On Wednesday, the outspoken broadcaster said Quinn shouldn’t be allowed to play in the tournament because they don’t identify as a woman.
‘How can you be transgender and non binary?’ asked the panel on his Uncensored talk show.
‘You both know this is such crap.’

Morgan went on to say: ‘She’s a biological woman playing against other biological women. If she doesn’t identify as a woman, why is she playing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup?
‘They don’t qualify for the Women’s World Cup because they used to be a woman. Now they don’t want to be a woman so now we have to call them they for being a transgender even though they are non-binary and they’re playing in the Women’s World Cup and we’re all supposed to go, ‘Well done Quinn. What a moment’.’
Since transitioning in 2020 Quinn has been allowed to continue playing professional women’s soccer on the basis of their sex assigned at birth, and has no plans to increase their testosterone levels while competing.
Morgan asked how somebody can be both trans and non-binary
Shortly after coming out in 2020, they explained how important it is for young trans people to have others to look up to.
‘I want to be a visible figure for young trans folks or people questioning their gender, people exploring their gender,’ Quinn said.
‘Because unfortunately when I was growing up, and even going through that process of figuring out myself in college, I didn’t have those people in the public sphere to look up to.
‘There are several trans athletes and several trans people in media and politics, but I just think those faces are not common enough.
‘I want to be a visible trans person succeeding in my job, so that younger trans folks could see that they did have an avenue to go and that they would have a future and a career ahead of them.’
Quinn will be hoping to help Canada build on their Olympic Gold medal by surpassing their best-ever finish at a World Cup – the quarter-finals in 2015 – starting with a clash against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday night, Australian time.
