A Perth municipality has imposed a $5,000 fine on residents for letting their trash cans smell too much.

In the eastern Perth suburb of Victoria Park, locals can be fined $5,000 if their organic garden waste bin attracts a bad odor.

Victoria Park mayor Karen Vernon said on 6PR radio that the law ensures that people sort their waste properly.

The mayor did put an end to the rumor that the municipality would use ‘garbage seekers’ to catch individuals.

In the eastern Perth suburb of Victoria Park, locals could face a monstrous $5,000 fine if their organic waste bin in the green garden attracts a bad odor

“What’s really important is that the contents of that third bin are just organic matter so it can be made into compost,” said Ms. Vernon.

‘We need some authority from a municipality to change that behavior in the right way.

“If at some point someone puts all the wrong things in that third bin, those people will find that there are consequences if they don’t do the right thing, but it’s certainly not as dramatic as trash cans roaming the street.”

Outraged locals took to social media to tout the move as “garbage.”

‘Fining someone because his trash can smell bad should be a municipal service to disinfect trash cans when they’re emptied. We pay astronomical rates, we show they are justified,” commented one user.

“It’s a blimmin trash can. It’s not going to smell like roses,’ said another.

‘Omg who’s got some seriously clean-smelling shit after a week in an outdoor arena? Maybe they can supply deodorant for our bins or perfume!’ a third wrote.
