This is the embarrassing moment a boyfriend's romantic proposal goes seriously wrong in front of a cheering crowd in Rome when his girlfriend refuses.

The proposal starts off well as they end up dancing in the fashionable Via dei Condotti under the Christmas lights. The young man then casually bends down on one knee with a sound as the voice of a tenor echoes across the square.

But his partner's body language is immediately awkward as she repeatedly gestures and begs him to stop in front of the audience as the romantic music continues.

'I did not expect it. I wasn't ready. But is that why we came to Rome?' she says several times, according to Italian publication La Stampa.

The man then allegedly asked in the presence of bystanders: “But is it yes or no?”

After some hesitation, she answers that it's a 'no', before he stands up, heartbroken.

In October, a mother accidentally ruined her son's engagement video in Italy when she tried to film his picturesque proposal.

TikTok user Jennifer posted a video of her mother-in-law trying to record her son popping the question.

The radiant couple stands in front of a fountain on St. Peter's Square.

As the TikToker's boyfriend falls on his left knee, the mother turns the camera to her face.

With the clear blue sky in the background and fluffy white clouds, the mother starts to laugh a little.

The camera shakes just before she focuses it back on her face. It is at this point that her body language and face begin to change as she realizes what she has done.

Her eyes widen and then she takes a big sip before the video ends.

It was clear that the mother didn't mean to turn the camera around and ruin her son and future daughter-in-law's special moment.
