Oscars go pop! Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande are all vying for Best Supporting Actress next year

Next year, some of the biggest names in music could be nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.

The 97th Academy Awards will be handed out on March 2, 2025, and predictions are already pouring in as to which Hollywood It-girl will take home the coveted prize.

Interestingly enough, it could be a battle of pop divas, as Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande are all said to be vying for the same spot.

According to arranged Variety According to the Awards Circuit’s predictions, all three are up for a Best Supporting Actress nomination, meaning they’ll likely be campaigning ahead of awards season.

First up is Gomez, for her role as wife and mother Jessi Del Monte in the Netflix musical drama Emilia Pérez.

The 32-year-old’s castmates include Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Édgar Ramírez and Adriana Paz.

The film follows “an underrated lawyer (Saldaña) who works for a large law firm and is more interested in freeing criminals than bringing them to justice, and is hired by the leader of a criminal organization,” according to a Netflix press release.

“You have a musical that’s not a musical, an action movie that’s not an action movie, a drama that’s not a drama, a comedy that’s not a comedy. It’s such a great gift, and I’m so proud to be part of it,” Karla Sofía Gascón told the platform’s website.

Emilia Pérez will be released in the Netflix library in the US, Canada, and the UK on November 13.

Meanwhile, Poker Face hitmaker Lady Gaga, 38 — who previously won an Oscar for her 2023 hit Hold My Hand — could be in contention for the award for her role as Lee, a version of Harley Quinn, in Warner Brothers’ upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux.

She stars opposite Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the Joker, Zazzie Beetz, Harry Lawtey, Jacob Lofland and Brendan Gleeson.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in theaters on October 4.

And Ariana Grande is expected to nab the coveted nomination for her role as Glinda in Universal Pictures’ upcoming musical film Wicked.

The 31-year-old Dangerous Woman singer transitioned from her pop star image to a Broadway opera-esque singing style for the highly anticipated project.

In the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, she stars alongside her boyfriend Ethan Slater, Cynthia Erivio, Jonathan Bailey and Peter Dinklage.

The musical fantasy, directed by celebrity filmmaker Jon M. Chu, is a prequel to the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. It explores the Wicked Witch of the West (Erivo)’s close relationship with Glinda the Good Witch (Grande) before Dorothy came along.

Ariana Grande is expected to be in contention for the coveted nomination for her role as Glinda in Universal Pictures’ upcoming musical film Wicked.

Wicked will be released in two parts. The first part will be released in theaters on November 22nd and the second part on November 21st, 2025.

Other top contenders for the Best Supporting Actress nomination include Selena’s Emilia Pérez co-star Zoe Saldaña for her role as attorney Rita Moro Castro.

Other predictions include Tilda Swinton for The Room Next Door, Danielle Deadwyler for The Piano Lesson, Isabella Rossellini for Conclave and Monica Barbaro for A Complete Unknown.

Voting on the nominations will take place from January 8 to 12, 2025. The official Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress will be announced on January 17, 2025, two months before the awards ceremony.
