Oscars 2025 nominations DELAYED amid catastrophic LA fires as Hollywood temporarily shuts down

Nominations for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards have been postponed due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires across Southern California.

A number of celebrities have lost their homes in the Pacific Palisades area, including Miles Teller, Anthony Hopkins, Adam Brody and wife Leighton Meester, as well as Anna Faris.

The fire in the upscale LA neighborhood — which started Tuesday morning — has currently burned about 1,000 buildings and 15,832 acres, per KTL 5.

Other wildfires have also broken out, such as the Eaton Fire in Pasadena and another called the Hurst Fire in the San Fernando Valley.

In the wake of the horrific events, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has officially postponed the announcement of the 2025 Oscar nominations from Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19.

The voting period – which started on Wednesday – has also been extended until Tuesday, January 14. Initially, voting was scheduled to end on Sunday, January 12.

A letter from the Academy, per The Hollywood Reporterread: ‘We would like to express our deepest condolences to those affected by the devastating fires in Southern California.’

“So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you.”

“Given the fire situation, we wanted to share some updates on an expansion of the voting window for the Oscars nominations, as well as updated information on Oscars Shortlist Screenings, Oscars Bake-Offs and the Academy Museum.”

Voting for the 2025 Oscar nominations opened this morning at 9 a.m. PT. We are extending the voting period by two days to give members more time to cast their votes. Voting now closes on Tuesday, January 14th at 5pm PT.”

Other academy events have also been temporarily canceled and will be rescheduled to a later date, such as the International Feature Film Shortlist Screening.

Bake-offs across the LA industry have been canceled while the Academy Museum closed its doors on Wednesday – and the screenings will be rescheduled to an unknown date.

Other Hollywood events have been shut down, including tapings for shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the price is right.

The 2025 Critics Choice Awards have also been postponed, after originally taking place this week on Sunday, January 12.

The annual ceremony was scheduled to take place this weekend at Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, a city close to the Pacific Palisades wildfire.

Joey Berlin, CEO of the Critics Choice Association, issued a statement announcing the event’s postponement to January 26 People.

“This unfolding tragedy has already had a profound impact on our community. All our thoughts and prayers are with those battling the devastating fires and with all those affected.”

The awards ceremony will still take place later this month at the Barker Hangar, and hosted by Chelsea Handler.

The annual BAFTA Tea Party was supposed to take place on Saturday, but this has also been cancelled.
