Oscar-winning octopus movie boss Craig Foster lost his million-pound home when his luxurious seaside mansion in South Africa burned down in a mysterious fire while he was gone.

The 52-year-old director delighted millions worldwide with My Octopus Teacher, a film in which he also starred about his friendship with a female octopus from the Atlantic Ocean.

The film showed him visiting his friend with eight tentacles every day for a year and building a remarkable confidence in the mollusk, earning him an Academy Award at the 2021 BAFTAs.

The four-bedroom house where he lives with his Indian filmmaker, wife Swati Thiyagarajan in Simonstown, overlooks False Bay in which he filmed the best documentary.

No one was injured in the blaze which turned into a fireball by strong winds at the £1million property that was destroyed during the tragedy but was eventually extinguished by a firefighter from neighboring fire stations.

Neighbor Matthew Steward said: ‘It was quite a big fire and the roof was on fire, but luckily no one was injured and all the animals in it were able to escape. It was lucky it didn’t spread to other houses.’

The fire in the upscale Murdock Valley area started at 10am on Thursday and was attended by Simon’s Town Fire and Rescue and the Cape Medical Response and was extinguished within two hours.

Another neighbor who didn’t want to be named said: ‘That house was the headquarters of My Octopus Teacher and it even featured a lot in the movie and it had become part of our local history here.

“Craig and Swati will just be devastated because there could be decades of their film work in there, notes and irreplaceable research and even the Academy Award they won for their film,” she said.
