Original Mr Blobby BBC costume from the 1990s draws offers of up to £60,000 after going up for sale on eBay
An original Mr Blobby costume from the 1990s is up for sale at auction on eBay for almost £60,000.
The pink and yellow suit of the iconic BBC character is up for auction until Thursday.
Bids started at just £39, but the price skyrocketed a few days later to £9,500 and hit £58,400 on Sunday morning.
The costume was made by the BBC’s costume supplier for an overseas version of Noel’s House Party.
The Mr Blobby costume was made by the BBC’s costume supplier in the late 1990s, but was not used for television.
The costume has fetched almost £60,000 and will no doubt go higher before the auction closes on Thursday.
A bid of over £84,000 on Sunday morning was withdrawn a few minutes later, but the price continues to rise.
The seller, listed as ‘blobby01’, says the balloon costume is in ‘not too bad’ condition for its age.
‘Consequently, since it is now over 25 years old, there is the inevitable aging of the foam and rubber coating. This means that it is less suitable to use, since the unit is not as flexible as it was in 1996.
In addition, the two arms need to be reattached to the body, one of the plastic eyes is broken, and the bow tie will need to be secured.
The costume’s age means there has been some damage, the seller says, but that doesn’t deter potential buyers.
Its arms will need to be sewn up and there are “visible wrinkles and dust on the cover,” the eBay description says.
“Overall not too bad for its age, but there are visible wrinkles and dust on the cover and some areas require a bead of glue to repair.”
‘Blobby01’ tells the story of the BBC costume, which was made for an overseas version of Noel’s House Party.
“Unfortunately, before it could be delivered, the overseas show was canceled and neither the broadcaster nor the BBC production team wanted it, so it stayed in my office until a move meant it came home with me. some years ago”.
The seller has been forced to sell the beloved heirloom while moving house.
