Original Dragon Quest trilogy gets the ‘HD-2D’ remake treatment
The highly anticipated “HD-2D” remake of the classic Enix role-playing game Dragon mission 3 will come to the Nintendo Switch in November, publisher Square Enix announced on Tuesday during a Nintendo Direct showcase. But Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D isn’t Square Enix’s only classic Erdrick adventure: the collection Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D was also announced on Tuesday, giving fans of Akira Toriyama and Yuji Horii’s RPG series a lavishly remade trilogy to enjoy over the next year.
Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D sends players on a recreated fantasy adventure as The Hero to take down the arch-enemy Baramos, travel to cities, dungeons and underground caverns, and battle slimes and other Toriyama-designed monsters in turn-based battles. The original Dragon mission 3 takes place before the events of the first two games in the series, so plays chronologically Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D prepare yourself for the next two games first.
Square Enix didn’t say much about what’s changing Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2Dor whether they will contain elaborate stories like Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D will happen, but that seems very likely.
Dragon Quest 3 HD 2D will be released on November 14 on Nintendo Switch. Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D will take place sometime in 2025.
Square Enix’s brand of HD-2D games started with developer Acquire’s retro RPG Octopath traveler in 2018. The RPG publisher saw the potential in HD-2D for both new releases and remakes; the style has been used ever since Octopath traveler 2 and tactics RPG Triangle strategywith plans for more remakes than the early Dragon Quest games.
