Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister on Friday slammed the opposition for its “small-mindedness” over the collapse of the Shivaji statue in Sindhudurg after Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologised to Maharashtra residents injured in the collapse.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Fadnavis said, “The opposition sees only politics in the incident, they cannot see beyond politics. The prime minister has openly apologised to all Shivaji’s followers. Playing politics on this issue is the small-mindedness of the opposition. We do not need the Congress’ certificate.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had apologised for the incident while addressing a rally in Malvan in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.

“Those who consider Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as their deity and are deeply hurt, I bow my head and apologise to them. Our values are different. For us, there is nothing greater than our deity,” PM Modi said.

On August 26, a 10-metre-high statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed in the state’s Sindhudurg district.

It is notable that Prime Minister Modi had inaugurated the 35-foot tall statue of Shivaji in the coastal state of Maharashtra in December last year. Less than nine months later, the statue collapsed.
