Opera may soon get its own version of ChatGPT

Opera’s web browsers, including Opera GX, may soon receive the ChatGPT upgrade if the parent company has anything to say about it.
According to CNBC (opens in new tab) and reported by Newwin (opens in new tab), Opera’s parent company Kunlun Tech plans to integrate the hugely popular OpenAI program ChatGPT into its own products. So far there are no confirmations as to which products that would be, whether that includes Opera and Opera GX web browsers.
This announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft and Google unveiling their own ChatGPT-like products, with the former integrating it into both Bing And Edge while that of the latter Bard AI will be added to Google Search. And it has been revealed that both the Chinese search engine Baidu (opens in new tab) And Chinese company Alibaba (opens in new tab) are set to release their own ChatGBT clones.
Why use ChatGPT?
As ChatGPT grows in popularity, tech giants are scrambling to get their own versions of the OpenAI program out the door, either as completely separate programs or tied into existing services.
According to the latest data from Stat counter (opens in new tab), Opera’s current market share in the desktop browser market is 3.41%, the lowest of the major browsers. Integrating its browsers with its own version of ChatGBT could certainly increase that percentage, especially if it offers a higher quality experience than its competitors.
This is pure speculation, of course, as we don’t know which of Kunlun Tech’s products will get the AI program treatment, but given the number of browsers that have already rolled out similar ones, it makes the most sense for Opera to be next in line.
Investing in such new technology comes with risks, as we have seen how much damage can be done by malicious parties. Not to mention plagiarism, dangerous spreading of disinformation and other major problems because of it. Still, it’s already activated the near-terminal Microsoft Bing search engine, so giving Opera a shot will likely help too.
