Urgent warning is issued over popular loungewear brand ‘Oodie’ – as company is punished for dangerous safety breach

The company behind popular loungewear brand The Oodie has been fined for failing to display fire hazard warning labels on several products.

On July 5, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission fined Davie Clothing $101,280 for the safety breach.

Between September 2022 and July 2023, it was found that more than 2,460 children’s beach Oodies did not contain high fire hazard warning labels.

Styles influenced by this included avocado, fruit faces, cheerful florals, blue tie-dye, charcoal and stripes.

ACCC vice-chair Catriona Lowe said the warning labels were “vital in alerting consumers to the high fire risk posed by products and in protecting children”.

“Children can suffer serious burns if their clothing catches fire. We urge consumers to be extra vigilant when children are near artificial heating or open flames,” Lowe said in a statement.

‘If consumers do not take the necessary steps to comply with the directive, they may not be aware of the high fire risk, and that is unacceptable.

“This is particularly worrying when it comes to children’s clothing.”

The manufacturer announced a voluntary recall in August last year after complaints were filed with the ACCC.

The regulator has warned in a recall that the towels “pose a risk of serious burns if exposed to a heat or flame source.”

Consumers who purchased the defective product are urged to ‘stop wearing the product immediately’ and contact Oodie.

The company will provide affected customers with the appropriate label and instructions to attach to the towel or send a replacement.

Oodie no longer sells the towels on its Australian website, but they can still be found in its US and UK online stores.

Founded by Adelaide entrepreneur and Shark Tank judge Davie Fogarty, Oodie has assets worth over $500 million.
