Only 29% of liberals say they are ‘extremely proud’ to be American
Unlucky Independence Day for Dems! Only 29% of liberals say they are ‘extremely proud’ to be American – while 60% of Republicans still claim to be very patriotic
- The proportion of Americans who say they are patriotic has been falling for years
- Democrats saw patriotism plummet especially during Trump’s presidency and then recover slightly after Joe Biden became president in 2021
- The Gallup numbers show that party membership is the best demographic differentiator for expressions of national pride
It’s a particularly unpatriotic Fourth of July for the Democrats, as their national pride remains at an all-time low.
Only 29 percent of liberals say they are “extremely proud” to be American as the nation celebrates its 247th birthday on Tuesday.
At the same time, a majority of Republicans remain very patriotic, with 60 percent saying they are extremely proud to be American, according to new Gallup data. But this is less than 86 percent 20 years ago in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
Independents, for their part, fall in between, with 33 percent saying they are extremely proud to be American – the lowest on record.

Democrats saw patriotism plummet especially during the Trump presidency and then recover slightly after Joe Biden became president in 2021.
At the same time as Democratic patriotism plummeted, Republicans saw a wave of pride for the country during the Trump years, which went down when Biden replaced him.
The last time a majority of Democrats said they were extremely proud of their country was in 2013 during Barack Obama’s second term.
The Gallup numbers show that party membership is the best demographic differentiator for expressions of national pride.
Meanwhile, the share of Americans who say they view the state of moral values in the US as “bad” has also increased.
In addition to party identification, age can also be a predictor of an American’s national pride.
While 50 percent of American adults age 55 and older say they are extremely proud to be American, 40 percent of 35 to 54 year olds say the same, and 18 percent of 18 to 34 year olds say the same.
The number of Republicans who view the state of American values as “bad” has soared over the past three years and now stands at 74 percent, nearly double what it was 20 years ago.
On the other hand, 38 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of Independents answered the same, with peaks over the past three years.
Overall, a record high of 50 percent of Americans consider the moral state in the US to be “bad.”

The number one moral problem, cited by 18 percent of Americans, is a lack of “concern for others.”
However, 11 percent of Republicans said the main moral problem was a lack of faith or religion.
The new Gallup numbers also show a change in family values.
The number of American 40-year-olds who have never married has risen significantly in recent years.
A whopping 25 percent of the age group have never married, according to the 2021 Pew Research Center issue, compared to just six percent in 1980.
