OnePlus Open may soon become the foldable ‘Apex’ as hardware upgrade launches soon

The OnePlus Open is a fantastic device; in fact, it tops our list of the best foldable phones . And later this month, the smartphone could potentially get even better, as the company recently unveiled the cool-sounding OnePlus Open Apex Edition.

The design is largely the same as before, though it launches in a deep Crimson Shadow red, a color the company says is inspired by the Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor. Like the box camera, the updated model has a silver frame and an orange Alert Slider. It even has a vegan leather back, just like the OnePlus Open in Voyager Black.

Details on the upgrade are scarce at this point, though we do know there will be some hardware improvements. A company representative told us it will come with “enhanced storage, AI imaging (tools), and innovative security features.” The product list also suggests the Apex Edition has more memory.

Possible upgrades

What exactly will be added to the foldable is unknown. OnePlus is keeping its cards close to its chest. If you head over to the official website, you’ll see the letter “X” next to the RAM and storage options where the numbers should be.

That said, we can speculate a bit about what could come. AI image editing is reminiscent of the Pixel 8’s Magic Editor, which lets you move objects around in a photo. The OnePlus Open already has a AI eraser for deleting people and things. Something akin to Magic Editor could be the next evolution. As for storage, the Apex Edition could go from 512GB of space all the way up to a full terabyte.

It’s hard to imagine what the new amount of memory will be. 32GB of RAM seems unlikely. Instead, we could see it get 24GB of RAM, just like the China-only OnePlus Ace 3 ProIf the company does so, the Apex Edition would be one of the first non-Chinese OnePlus phones to feature more than 16GB of storage.

Solid user experience

Aside from those few changes, it doesn’t look like the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will be all that different from the current model. You still get the dual AMOLED displays. There’s no chipset swap, and the rear camera array doesn’t get a lens upgrade either. Don’t be too disappointed. Again, this is a very good foldable phone. At the very least, the user experience will be better, especially if the editing tools are as good as we think they will be.

There is one slight downside to the Apex version. It is only guaranteed to get “three major Android updates and four years of security updates from launch.” The standard phone gets an extra year for both sets of software patches.

There’s no word yet on how much the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will cost at launch, but all will be revealed on August 7. Until then, check out Ny Breaking’s list of the best OnePlus phones for 2024.
