One final Woj bomb: ESPN scoop master Adrian Wojnarowski announces shock retirement

Adrian Wojnarowski, who made his name writing NBA news, has announced that he is retiring from journalism to become general manager of the men’s basketball program at his alma mater, St Bonaventure.

Wojnarowski, whose tweets announcing NBA deals and trades became known as “Woj Bombs,” made the announcement on Wednesday.

His knack for breaking news made him one of the most prominent sports journalists in the US, attracting 6.5 million followers on X. But it also required near-constant attention to the inner workings of one of the world’s most successful leagues, something Wojnarowski was referring to when he announced his decision on X.

“This profession has changed my life, but I have decided to retire from ESPN and the news industry. I understand the dedication my role requires and it is an investment I am no longer willing to make,” he wrote. “Time is not infinite and I want to spend my time in ways that are more personally meaningful.”

Wojnarowski graduated from St Bonaventure in 1991 and has helped raise funds for the school.

“It is the thrill of a lifetime to be able to return to a university and community that I love in a role of service to our student-athletes, coaches and institution,” Wojnarowski told ESPN. “I hope to add value to our basketball program in many areas and open doors for the future of our young men, both professionally and personally.”

Wojnarowski has been with ESPN since 2017 and previously worked at Yahoo Sports and The Record of Bergen County (New Jersey).

Scoop specialists have become a kind of star in the American sports media. People like Adam Schefter, Shams Charania and Wojnarowski have become almost as famous as the athletes they write about.
