Read the shocking message a food critic left before he was forced to offer a humiliating apology to an award-winning chef after huge blow-up in restaurant
A food critic has apologized after an award-winning chef was left ‘disgusted’ by his behavior in his restaurant.
Hobart-based Omotenashi chef Lachlan Colwill spoke about his experience hosting SA Life writer Paul Wood on Saturday.
The chef alleged that Wood was unaware of the etiquette expected in fine dining restaurants and that he repeatedly disrupted his other guests.
The situation reached a boiling point when Mr Colwill claimed Wood had insulted his friend, prompting him to ask the critic to leave the room and ‘never return’.
Wood claimed he left the venue of his own accord and quickly took to Instagram, where he told his followers that dining at Omotenashi was a “waste of time” because it “probably served the worst, overpriced dinner in Hobart.”
Mr Colwill responded by slamming the verdict as ‘not resulting from criticism or thoughtful analysis’. Adelaide Advertiser reported.
“I’m all for journalism and criticism,” Colwill said.
‘But what does it feel like to be criticized by someone whose criticism does not come from a professional approach or intelligence?

Mr Colwill responded to an Instagram story from Wood in which he called his restaurant ‘probably the worst overpriced diner in Hobart’
“If someone does that (posts harmful claims) and no one calls it out and lets them do it, then it’s only going to get worse and it’s going to make the industry worse.”
The impasse prompted Omotenashi to close the following night.
In a statement to the outlet, Wood apologized for his behavior and admitted that Omotenashi served “excellent food in a unique location.”
“As a food lover, I was looking forward to a sensational dining experience at the renowned Omotenashi restaurant last night and regretted that it turned sour,” he said.
‘I also like small talk, which I know can sometimes have a counterproductive effect… and I’m very sorry if I offended the entrepreneurs or other guests.
‘Any comment made by me yesterday about my experience at the restaurant should not be considered a professional review by anyone.
“I sincerely hope that my apology will be accepted and that the restaurant will continue to prosper.”
Omotenashi is a 10-seater Kaiseki-style Japanese restaurant located in Hobart’s Lexus showroom.
Mr Colwill and business partner Sophie Pope will serve guests a 15-course meal over three hours, accompanied by tea and sake, for $312.
The venue is usually fully booked several weeks in advance due to its popularity and limited seating.
Dozens of the restaurant’s fans showed their support after the public feud, with many praising Mr Colwill and Ms Pope as hard-working people.
Mr Colwill previously managed the famous Hentley Farm in the Barossa Valley and has received several awards including Best Restaurant in South Australia and Vittoria Coffee Restaurant of The Year.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Wood’s publisher, SA Life, for further comment.
