South Sudanese sprinter Lucia Moris was carried off the field on a stretcher after she appeared to suffer a serious injury during the preliminary round of the women’s 100 metres at the Paris Olympics.

While the track events got underway on Friday, the focus was on sprinting.

However, in one of the heats, Moris suffered an injury halfway through the race. The 23-year-old collapsed in pain, about 30 meters from the finish.

She had started the race well on the inside lane, but after one particular step she suddenly felt uncomfortable.

Moris stumbled, stopped and fell. After the race, medical personnel were rushed to the track to help her.

The South Sudanese athlete was found writhing on the ground in pain, clutching her leg.

She remained on the ground for several minutes after the race before being carried off the track by medical staff.

Congolese Natacha Ngoye won the heat with a time of 11.34 seconds, but several of Moris’ competitors quickly checked to make sure she was okay.

Many fans expressed their condolences to Moris after the heartbreaking moment, when she appeared to fly into second place after a positive start.

One said: ‘We are praying for Lucia Moris and hoping she is well,’ to which another added: ‘I never want to see that again.’

Other supporters expressed their sadness at what had happened, with another joking: ‘Oh god I feel so bad for Lucia Moris that she got injured straight away.’

Moris was competing in her second Olympic Games, having also taken part in the Tokyo Games, where she carried the flag of South Sudan.

However, her elimination in the preliminary rounds means that South Sudan has still not won a single medal since the first Olympic Games in Rio eight years ago.
