Olympic Games semi final brought to a halt after female star suffered sickening injury: ‘So much blood’

  • Joosje Burg suffered a shocking injury in Paris
  • She was hit in the face by a hockey ball in the semi-final
  • The Dutch star was able to resume the match

A painful injury caused the women’s hockey semi-final at the Olympic Games to be halted in disturbing scenes.

Dutch Joosje Burg was standing a few meters away from her opponent during the exciting match against Argentina on Wednesday when she received a hard shot in the face.

Blood was pouring from the 27-year-old’s head and she lay motionless on the ground as her teammates and medical staff rushed to treat her.

Television channel Eurosport decided not to show Burg on the ground, so serious was his injury.

Staff applied a bandage to her nose to stop the bleeding and play was stopped for more than five minutes.

Burg eventually got back on his feet and, with the help of four medical staff, was able to leave the playing field.

However, play could not be resumed immediately as attempts were made to remove the blood that had spilled onto the pitch.

“They have to try and stop the flow,” the concerned commentary team said on Eurosport. “There’s a lot of blood there.”

In incredible scenes, the brave 27-year-old returned to the game after being patched up on the sidelines, but was banned from wearing her blood-stained shirt, so she put on a new one.

The new shirt had no number on the back, so the alert Dutch officials made a number out of tape so the referee could identify her.

The Netherlands kept fighting for their teammate and won 3-0 in Paris.

The invincible Dutch team will face Belgium or China in the battle for the gold medal. It is the sixth time in a row that they are in the final.
