A Chinese badminton player who proposed to his girlfriend after she won gold at the Paris Olympics has been criticised by fans online for ‘making the moment all about him’.
After winning the badminton mixed doubles competition with partner Zheng Siwei last Friday, there was double celebration for Huang Ya Qiong when her boyfriend Liu Yuchen got down on one knee and popped the question.
Liu was waiting for Huang with flowers after the medal presentation, but surprised her when he fell to the ground and pulled out a ring to propose to her.
A visibly shocked Huang said yes to her partner, who represented China in men’s doubles badminton, and burst into tears after the romantic gesture.
However, Liu’s proposal was not well received by fans on social media.
