‘I was enjoying a lovely roast with the kids at a friend’s house, Greg was home from his run and he texted to say he had an allergic reaction to something and was itching.
“I didn’t think much of it until two minutes later he called me screaming. And I mean SHOUT. He yelled “YOU MUST COME HERE NOW” and so I drove back to our house calling an ambulance, terrified that I was about to get home and wasn’t breathing him.
‘999 said it would be 40 minutes, but that’s another topic to talk about another day. Anyway, I ran into the house and found Greg there again, screaming. Acting like one of those people you see in videos of them taking bath salts…
He clawed at his skin and just screamed. Repeatedly. He ran to our car and as I called 999 again to tell me to take it, we had to go through every red light and I had to concentrate not to crash as he screamed and tried to grab the steering wheel…
“He was delirious and I looked like I kidnapped him. I was on the phone with the 999 call handler and the poor girl kept saying “Okay yeah he doesn’t sound good please be safe but hurry”.

In another post, she continued: “I threw him into the emergency room, parked and when I got there they told me they sent him to Resus – I think mainly because he was a six-foot man who acted like a psychopath and didn’t. don’t want to scare anyone.
“They pumped him full of steroids and antihistamines and it seemed to work almost immediately. Luckily by the time I got there he had stopped yelling and raking himself.
“The doctor who suggested the viral thing hadn’t seen how Greg had been on arrival; I can’t explain how much pain he was in. This is a guy shaking off a grumbling appendix, so let me know if you’ve had a similar experience in an allergy way.”
In another post, she continued, “After 3 hours we were allowed to go home. I almost felt like having a heart attack, but other than that it’s all good health wise.
My question is – we didn’t do anything different in terms of food/drink yesterday but the only snack @gregirutherford ate was nuts – could he just have developed an allergy we think? Have any of you had this?
The hospital recommended that he be tested, but said it could have been viral. I appreciate that a rash can occur with a viral illness, but his body went crazy.”
After fans wondered if Greg had come into contact with a plant during his run that caused the reaction, Susie continued, “We don’t think it was some sort of plant because the reaction started before he ran (although we understand that this is the symptoms of sweating).
“Greg has some tests this morning so hopefully the ball can get rolling and if I don’t get back to you yet then I’m really sorry.”
‘I’ve already had about 500 messages! Really appreciate all the advice x’
The terrifying crisis comes just months after Greg revealed he had postponed his wedding following the death of a close family member.
He said the happy celebrations had to be postponed after the couple lost a close relative. Greg explained, “Today was supposed to be our anniversary.

His fiancé Susie saw the bright side and commented on the post: “Thank God I’ve started opting for longer nails because these hand photos show me a male tradesman has had a manicure.”
‘Due to the loss of someone so close and important we have postponed the big day – As usual the weather in the UK is going to be perfect, we are a little miffed.
“But we can plan it all again and hopefully really put together exactly what we want. @susiejverrill I know today will be frustrating but I love you so much and we’ll have an even better wedding when we finally get it done.’
Seeing the bright side, Susie responded to the post, “Thank goodness I started going for longer nails because these hand photos show me a male craftsman had a manicure.”
Greg is an Olympic champion who won gold in the London long jump in 2012 and also competed in Strictly Come Dancing in 2016.
