Ollie Wines is taken out of Port Adelaide game after suffering heart scare during Power’s clash with Hawthorn

Brownlow medalist Ollie Wines left Port Adelaide’s match against Hawthorn early after suffering heart problems.

The 29-year-old crouched down as a passage of play unfolded towards the end of the first quarter, before slowly making his way to the interchange bench at Adelaide Oval.

It was unclear what was wrong with the midfielder, and experts were left baffled.

“We certainly didn’t see any injury, so when we saw that he was out immediately we were like, ‘What happened?’ Campbell Brown said at halftime.

‘Fingings crossed that he will do well and that he won’t miss a long period of football because of this.’

However, Mark Soderstrom later confirmed that Wines had suffered from heart problems, with the midfielder having experienced similar problems in the past.

“If you remember a few years ago, I think it was about April 2022, it was a Thursday night match and Ollie Wines came away with palpitations,” he said.

‘He had it checked out and about a week later they talked about it being a problem that was quite common, especially among older people and elite athletes, where it’s essentially an arrhythmia where his heart goes haywire.

‘There is a lot of dizziness and nausea associated with it, it can come in different forms.’
