Olivia Munn shares update on her breast cancer battle more than a year after diagnosis

Olivia Munn kept her fans and followers updated on her ongoing battle with breast cancer in a series of Instagram posts on Wednesday and Thursday.

The 44-year-old actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2023, posted a series of clips on the social media platform to her 3 million followers on Wednesday, sparking a discussion about the serious topic.

The Oklahoma City resident captioned the image, “My breast cancer timeline. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about this and I’ve been meaning to make this video for those who have been asking for it for a while, but I’ve been filming, wrapping up filming, chasing a toddler, and starting a new medication.

‘Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions about my treatments or the surgeries I mentioned, please post them in the comments.

Munn, who played Sloan Sabbith on HBO’s The Newsroom from 2012 to 2014, said she hoped to inform, help and inspire others “who have gone through or are going through the same thing.

“Maybe some comfort knowing that I’ve walked the same path and I’m doing well.”

The X-Men: Apocalypse actress attached a visual timeline to her post documenting her health journey, featuring dates and treatments, with graphs on the side of the screen.

The time frame leading up to Munn’s official diagnosis was as follows: ‘Jan 2022 2 mammograms, 2 ultrasounds: clear; Jan 2023 mammogram: clear; Feb 2023 genetic test: 0% chance of genetic cancer; Mar 2023 Tyrer-Cuzik Breast Cancer Assessment Score: 37.3%.’

Munn’s timeline showed that she underwent an MRI, ultrasound, and biopsies in March and April 2023, before being diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in April 2023.

Munn’s timeline continued in May 2023 with a “nipple delay, lymph node dissection, and double mastectomy,” followed by an egg retrieval in June 2023.

The timeline showed that she underwent breast reconstruction in September 2023 and began the Lupron regimen in November.

In April 2024, Munn underwent a partial hysterectomy/oophorectomy, as planned, and in August she began an Arimidex regimen.

Munn, who is the mother of two-year-old son Malcolm with her husband John Mulaney (42), told her followers she would continue to make “videos answering as many questions as possible” on the topic.

Munn said she hoped to inform, help and inspire others “who have been through it or are going through it now.”

Munn said she was grateful for the support she has received during her health struggle.

“It really means a lot to me and it’s been incredibly healing,” she said of the support.

She added that she is grateful for the support she has received from the public during her battle with her health.

“I just wanted to let everyone who has messaged me or stopped me on the street while I was shopping know that it really means a lot to me and it’s been incredibly healing, so thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,” she said.

In an additional note she posted Wednesday, Munn acknowledged that she was aware of the feedback she had received and that she planned to address it as soon as she had the opportunity.

“I see all of your comments. I’ll be taking note of them all and answering them in follow-up videos,” Munn said. “So if you don’t see me responding, know that I’m working on it.”

In a later post on her Instagram Stories on Thursday, Munn said that a number of comments asked about the Tyrer-Cuzick test, which she described as a “free online test” that estimates someone’s likelihood of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

She explained the factors involved in the test, referring to multiple online resources for more information about this.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” she said. “I hope that by sharing this I can provide comfort, inspiration and support to others on their own journey.”

“Surprisingly, I only cried twice,” Munn said. “I guess I didn’t feel like I had time to cry.

“I found myself focusing less and less and pushing aside all the emotions that I felt would get in the way of my clarity of mind. One day I would feel absolutely fine, the next I would wake up in a hospital bed after a ten-hour operation.”
