Olivia Colman defends her on-screen Heartstopper son, Kit Connor, after the teen was bullied into coming out as bisexual: ‘I’m so proud of him’

Olivia Colman is defending her on-screen son from bullies after actor Kit Connor came out as bisexual.

The bullying began when the 18-year-old starred opposite Olivia, 48, in the Netflix series Heartstopper, as a rugby player whose relationship with another boy at school may lead to more than friendship.

Kit made the announcement on Halloween via Twitter writing: ‘I’ll be back for a minute. I’m bisexual. Congratulations on forcing an 18-year-old boy out of the closet. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.’

At the Los Angeles premiere of her film Empire of Light on Thursday, the Oscar winner went into mommy bear mode as she counted Variety she was “very proud” of her co-star.

I’m very proud of him, but I’m not proud of how people bullied him. I think people should be allowed to have their own journey.’

“But I’m incredibly proud of him as a young man for dealing with all of that and being in the spotlight. It’s unfair,” he continued. ‘But he’s amazing. He is a very beautiful human being.

Olivia, who shares three sons: Finn, 17, Hall, 15, and a seven-year-old daughter, whose name has not been released, with her husband of 21 years, Ed Sinclair, said she feels the show’s message is important.

“If any of my children have experienced that, I would like them to know that the world can be beautiful and tolerant and loving.”

Heartbreaker creator Alice Oseman also came to Kit’s defense after her announcement.

In a comment to the post, he wrote: “I really don’t understand how people can watch ‘Heartstopper’ and then gleefully spend their time speculating on sexualities and judging based on stereotypes.” I hope all those people are ashamed as F**K. Kit you are amazing.

Kit may have the last laugh at his bullies. He and his co-star Joe Locke are on the cover of GQ Men of the Year problem telling the fashion magazine after coming into the spotlight that she wants to support LGBTQ+ designers so she can ‘support the community’ to the best of her ability.
