If this is your name, you’re officially old: Millennial mum shocked after innocent comment from her daughter

An Australian mother of two was shocked to learn what primary school children consider to be ‘older person names’. For Millennials, these names will sound very familiar.

Steph Pase from Sydney was chatting to her Generation Alpha daughter and asked for the names of other children.

“I asked my six-year-old daughter, is there anyone in your year called Sarah, Alex, Jack or Daniel? She laughed and said ‘those are names for old people!'” the mother recounted in a video.

Surprised by the comment, Steph listed more names, including Ryan, Steph and Michelle.

But her daughter replied “no” and gave her the names of people in her class.

“It just makes me realize that we are that generation… our parents’ generation. Names like Karen, Helen or Joanna,” Steph continued.

“It’s just crazy and we’re that generation now that has those old people names.”

Steph was shocked to learn that her name was likely considered “old” by Generation Alpha as well.

The video has now caught the attention of thousands of parents, and most of them agreed with it.

“As a primary school teacher, it deviates further and further from the names I know every year, but the children don’t know any better!”, someone wrote.

‘I work in childcare, I literally had a conversation about this with my fellow teachers yesterday. It’s a strange thought that these names are outdated,’ said another.

“Luna, Harper and Arlo are the new Ashley, Jessica and Stephanie,” a third declared.

Another mother joined in the conversation and said that the names in her children’s classes are Lamb, Honey, Hazard, Blu and Bambi.

“I’m a millennial and my kids are Colette, Azekiel and Imogen,” another confessed.

Other common names among Generation Alpha include Vision, Stoney, Diesel, Hennesy, Blaze, Cruze, Kingdom, Ace, Boss, Oasis, Mercedes, and Destiny.

“Yes! In my daughter’s class there is a Pharaoh, Koa, Imara,” said another mother.

“My daughters’ friends all have old, traditional names: Charlotte, Ophelia, Nina, Emmi, April, Violet, Stevie, Clare, Harriet and Wendy,” wrote someone else.

But a former childcare worker added: ‘We still have the classics like Jack, Liam, Claire and Daniel, but the choice is huge.’
