They traditionally graze in the upper regions of the Andes in southern Peru.
But one alpaca has discovered that he much prefers the comforts of this Scottish home.
Annie the alpaca was hand raised by Dannie Burns after being rejected by her mother when she was only 10 minutes old.
She felt completely at ease in her surroundings and never left. According to Mr Burns, she now thinks she is a dog.
Mr Burns takes her everywhere – in the large back seat of the Vauxhall Zafira he bought especially for her.

Now four years old and pregnant with a baby of her own, Annie still rejects the herd of 75 dogs in the fields, preferring to stay indoors with her three labradoodles.
If her baby follows in his mother’s footsteps, Mr. Burns may soon need a bigger car — and a house even bigger than his 3,200-square-foot home.
Mr Burns, from Stirling, said: ‘I’m not sure whether her next baby will behave like her or like an alpaca, but if it does, we may have to be given a reprieve.
‘Annie is due to give birth again at the end of September.
“She’s acting more like a dog now. Every time the door opens, she lays down next to the TV, just like a dog.”
He now runs The Alpaca Trekking Centre in Stirling, where he looks after cows, sheep and even a golden eagle.
Annie was rejected by her mother and had to be bottle fed by Mr. Burns every two hours, which created a bond between them.
Dealing with her canine friends affected her, and Annie acts like a dog in exactly the same way she did growing up.
He thought she might outgrow indoor life, but even after she had her first baby, Bailey (now two), she remained a pet.
Bailey lives outside with the herd, but mother Dannie prefers to socialize with the three dogs in the comfort of the home.
And baby Bailey also likes to follow her mom inside, so she gets the best of both worlds.

Annie is now pregnant with her second child, due next month.
“We’re all very excited. It’s a busy life, but it’s a lot of fun,” Burns said.
‘Everyone thinks I’m crazy, but I don’t mind.’
Annie lives on grains, barley and oats, and other things she gathers.
However, Mr. Burns said she also has some unusual tastes.
He said, ‘She likes chewing gum, chocolate, apples and bananas.
“She chews on cables. They don’t have front teeth on top, but they are quite sharp on the back.
“It’s not as bad as a puppy chewing on your shoes.”
