A hair specialist has revealed the ‘right way’ to use conditioner – and how often you should actually wash your hair.

Dr. Crystal Aguh, associate professor of dermatology and an Olaplex Member of the Scientific Advisory Board, sheds light on the mistakes Australians often make in the shower and the two ‘must-have’ products that customers can’t get enough of.

Although most only condition the ends of their hair, Dr. Aguh to apply the product from the root to the tip.

“This keeps the hair hydrated and minimizes damage from daily wear and tear,” she told FEMAIL.

The professional added that a quick 30-second lather is all that’s needed when washing your hair — and extra cleansing can actually do more harm than good.

How often you should wash your hair also depends on the type of curl.

“A quick 15 to 30 second lather is all that is needed for an adequate shampoo and cleanse. Double shampooing can be helpful if you have a lot of product buildup,” said Dr. Aguh.

She recommends Olaplex Number 4 ($54) and Number 5 ($54), both of which have only increased in popularity since their original launch.

How often should you wash your hair?

Dr. Aguh revealed that washing frequency varies and is greatly influenced by hair type.

For example, if you have straight, fine hair that gets greasy very easily, the ideal washing frequency is between one and two days.

But if you have fuller, wavy hair, the ideal washing frequency is somewhere between two and three days.

For those with tightly curled hair, washing should ideally be done once a week, but once every two weeks can work well. This gives curly hair ample opportunity to be regularly moisturized and conditioned.

How long should you foam while washing?

According to Dr. Aguh, you only need to shampoo your hair for a maximum of 30 seconds.

“The chemistry of washing and conditioning your hair is relatively simple,” she said.

‘When you apply shampoo to your hair, it leaves a negative charge, while conditioner is positively charged. Exposing more negative charges by shampooing your hair twice can help conditioners work better, but only to a certain extent.

‘This is because over-shampooing can also damage the hair. It is important to find an ideal balance.’

She added that if your hair doesn’t feel dirty after two days, washing with shampoo followed by conditioner is “more than enough.”
