A couple lies in hot water in Brazil after deciding to paint the waters of a beautiful 60-foot waterfall bright blue to celebrate their baby’s gender reveal party on Sunday.

The parents-to-be were accused of causing an environmental disaster in the river, which serves the nearby town of Tangará da Serra in Mato Grosso state, during their 50-member party.

The couple – not formally identified in local media – posted videos of the event on social media yesterday before hastily removed them amid a massive outcry.

The city has experienced periods of drought that have affected its water supply, so any contamination of the water source in the name of a gender reveal party will not be well received by the locals who depend on it.

Outraged social media users brought the stunt to the attention of local authorities who have launched an investigation and sent a team to the waterfall.

“The Inspectorate will investigate the environmental damage caused by the material thrown into the water,” Mato Grosso State Environment Secretary (Sema-MT) said in a statement.

‘If there is an environmental crime, those responsible will be charged and they can be held responsible for an environmental crime.’

The municipal environmental service is also keeping an eye on the case, according to reports.

A man named Anderson Reis, reported as one of those responsible for the waterfall painting stunt by Brazilian outlet G1denied that any chemical was used to produce the blue color.

However, he said he would not comment further until the Environment Secretary completed their investigation.

The event took place on Sunday, September 25 on a private property crossed by the Queima Pé River in Tangará da Serra, 242 km from Cuiabá, the state capital.

The fall was identified as the Queima-Pe River waterfall, near Tangara da Serra in Brazil.

The waterfall is 18 meters high and is located six kilometers from the center of Tangara da Serra. The site is known as a destination for ecological tourism activities.

But the stunt backfired and many on social media demanded that the couple be arrested for an environmental offence.

Others warned of possible water pollution for people further downstream.

After the videos went viral, Mato Grosso State Secretary for the Environment confirmed that they are investigating the matter to find out if an environmental crime has been committed.

“Congratulations…you are becoming the parents of a wonderful environmental crime,” said environmental engineer Vanessa Costa.
