Almost all energy suppliers have been instructed by watchdog Ofgem to do more to support customers.

The regulator has also issued preliminary injunctions to Utilita and Scottish Power, requiring them to take urgent action.

Both were charged with setting overpayments for those trying to pay off debts.

Ofgem also found that some firms had failed to identify those who could not pay their bills. Others had ‘nonexistent’ policies to help hard-hit households.

British Gas was the only supplier to escape criticism. Dame Clare Moriarty, chief executive of Citizens Advice, says: ‘The review confirms what struggling customers know: some energy companies are falling short.

Jonathan Brearley, CEO of Ofgem, adds: ‘There is a lot of pressure on energy companies, but the needs of vulnerable customers must be a top priority.’
