The answers to today’s Strands, game #294, are…

  • SNOW
  • CLELLS
  • GLITTERING
  • TO WALK
  • SLED
  • SPANGRAM: WINTER WONDERLAND

  • My rating: Simple
  • My score: Perfect

Using the words from the first verse of WINTER WONDERLAND made today’s Strands a piece of cake – and I’m sure you were singing about Parson Brown by the time you finished it.

It’s one of those songs that’s hard to screw up, which makes it the perfect karaoke song – perfect except for the fact that it only really works one month out of the year.

In Britain it is a song cherished by football fans, who will change the words to suit their star striker, with a few variations to suit the club and player. For example, in Scotland in the 1990s, Celtic fans honored goalscorer Jorge Cadete with the chant:

“There is only one Jorge Cadete / He puts the ball in the net / He is Portuguese / and he scores with ease / Walking in a Jorge Wonderland.”

Um, what I said about a song being hard to screw up… I take it back.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.
