The answers to today’s Connections game, game #578, are…

  • YELLOW: VENDOR’S SPOTLIGHT AT A MARKET STAND, STALL, STAND, TABLE
  • GREEN: DOG COMMANDS COME, HEEL, SIT, STAY
  • BLUE: BUSINESS DEPARTMENTS FINANCE, IT, LEGAL, SALES
  • PURPLE: LAST WORDS IN “AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL” FROM, SEA, SHINING, TO

  • My rating: Moderate
  • My score: Perfect

It’s a strange feeling to get the purple group in second place, and I haven’t experienced that often. “FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA” felt almost too obvious – like an obvious yellow group.

My first thought about today’s words was Stephen King’s novels – IT, The SHINING, The STAND – and that’s as far as I could get before seeing the LAST WORDS IN “AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL” and DOG COMMANDS.

THE VENDOR’S POT AT A MARKET did not contain the best: a blanket on the floor, the place most often used by someone who has no official place in the market. There is a Saturday market near me where another “place” comes into play: an opened suitcase on top of a garbage can. This is a sales style exclusive to perfumes of dubious origin, the suitcase necessary for a quick departure. It is best to stick to vendors with a booth, stall, stand or table.

Yesterday’s NYT Connections answers (Wednesday, January 8, game #577)

  • YELLOW: SECTION BRANCH, DIVISION, LEMA, WING
  • GREEN: ACCESSORIES FOR PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT BOW, DRUM, MALLET, PICK
  • BLUE: DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF AN ELEPHANT EAR, MEMORY, TRUNK, TUSK
  • PURPLE: WORDS MISPELLED IN NU METAL BAND NAMES COOKIE, CORN, LINCOLN, STAINED

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is often quite tough, and purple is usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.

It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.

It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
