NY Gov. Kathy Hochul deploys another 150 National Guardsmen as migrant crisis turns lawless: Two asylum seekers are arrested at the Roosevelt Hotel after ‘beating up girlfriends’

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed an additional 150 National Guardsmen to help with New York’s migrant crisis that raged over the weekend, with three men arrested for allegedly assaulting their girlfriends in emergency shelters .

Hochul announced Monday that another 150 troops will join the more than 2,000 troops already helping with the migrant surge in New York state, which has already seen more than 116,000 people arrive this year.

The National Guard will focus exclusively on case management of Venezuelans, who can apply for temporary protected status and then receive a work permit.

Hochul’s move comes as the migrant crisis reaches a boiling point in both NYC and Chicago, as thousands continue to cross the US-Mexico border before heading north to sanctuary cities, where they are entitled to shelter.

Three migrants were arrested over the weekend for domestic violence at the iconic The Roosevelt Hotel and a hotel-turned-shelter in Long Island City.

On Sunday, an allegedly intoxicated Milton Vargas-Torapanta, 31, was accused of assaulting his wife, 27, in front of their 11-year-old daughter in their room at a hotel-turned-lodging facility in Long Island City, Queens.

Also on Sunday, Jefferson Rivera, 23, was arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly struck his girlfriend with a closed fist and tried to strangle her in front of the couple’s child at The Roosevelt Hotel, which had been converted into a emergency shelter for migrants. in May.

Just a day earlier, police were called to the shelter at The Roosevelt for another domestic fight involving 23-year-old Franklin Mendoza, who was charged with intimidation, aggravated intimidation and three counts of assault.

Rivera has not yet been charged and Mendoza was released without bail on Sunday, The New York Post reported.

The historic Manhattan Tower, dubbed “the new Ellis Island” by one city official, has become the registration point for migrants arriving in the city by bus after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. Many of them have been sent north by Republican governors fed up with what they say are Democrats’ open-gun policies.

The hotel is one of several in Manhattan designated to house migrant families with children who started attending downtown schools this fall. The city currently pays about $385 per night per migrant family in need of housing and food. According to Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, asylum seekers cost the city about $10 million every day.

Adams is facing an angry backlash after more than 110,000 migrants have poured into the city since spring 2022.

The Big Apple has taken in more than double the number of migrants than the next most popular cities. Adams has called for state and federal help as the migrant crisis will cost the city an estimated $12 billion over the next three years.

New York City’s migrant crisis is expected to cost the city $4.7 billion this year. Above is a list of some of the landmarks that have been converted into emergency shelters as officials struggle to house nearly 60,000 migrants in the city’s care

Houston was listed as the destination for 15,416 people, while 15,329 people documented heading to Los Angeles County and 11,081 to Miami-Dade County since May.

Despite Mayor Adams’ cries for help from the state and federal governments, the city has not received any assistance to cover the additional costs, so the $4.7 billion would come from the city’s budget. That amount is equal to the budgets for municipal sanitary facilities, fire brigade and parks combined.

Adams has warned that the city’s services will be affected by the incredible extra spending in the budget. He has previously stated that the city plans to cut services such as library hours, meals for seniors and free day care for three-year-olds.

Governor Hochul warned last week that asylum seekers arriving in New York City will not be housed in hotel rooms as in the past.

“We need to make it known that if you come to New York, you won’t have more hotel rooms, we don’t have capacity,” Hochul said on CNN. ‘So we must also make it clear that we have reached the limit: if you are going to leave your country, go somewhere else.’

It’s a stunning reversal from her statements in December 2021, when she pledged to house and protect asylum seekers — before thousands of migrants arrived each month from southern border states. More than 113,000 migrants have arrived in the city since last spring.

“As you know, there is an inscription on the Statue of Liberty. It says: give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, longing to be free,” Hochul said earlier. “You are welcome with open arms and we will do our best to keep you safe… Not only will we house you, but we will protect you.”
