This sheer dominance is largely based on Nvidia’s position as the undisputed leader in the AI hardware space. The company’s rivals simply can’t compete with the superior performance of its graphics processing units (GPUs), which have been the foundation for the widespread adoption of AI tools, with Nvidia’s technology better in terms of versatility and raw performance.
Despite so much recent success, however, several challenges still threaten to undermine Nvidia’s competitive edge. The cost of producing these GPUs remains very high, while the accelerated use of AI raises environmental concerns, as the technology involved is energy-intensive.
With this in mind, is it likely that Nvidia will continue its meteoric rise in the months and years ahead? Or will the tech giant’s competitors find a way to close the gap?

Segregation of the market
The AI semiconductor market can be split into two segments: training and inference applications, where training takes place only on GPUs in data centers and inference is performed on servers or edge devices. As a result, there are essentially three market segments that organizations looking to gain a foothold in the industry can target.
Edge AI inference is driven by the need for improved data security, as reducing reliance on cloud servers minimizes the risk of data breaches. Furthermore, edge devices offer real-time data processing, zero latency, and autonomy, improving overall performance.
Cost savings are another key factor, as reducing reliance on expensive cloud services for AI can result in substantial reductions in total cost of ownership. Additionally, reduced power consumption and carbon emissions from edge devices align with environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals.
Nvidia’s monopoly on the training market
In the GPU training sector, Nvidia’s dominance is overwhelming, with a 98% market share compared to rivals like Google and Intel. This unparalleled level of success is unlikely to disappear anytime soon, thanks to the performance of Nvidia’s semiconductors and the synchronized ecosystem the company has established.
In essence, advanced GPUs and extensive software support make Nvidia the go-to solution for many data centers and high-performance computing applications. As a result, potential rivals in this space face insurmountable barriers to entry if they have designs on challenging Nvidia.
Exploiting the gap in edge inference
It is the edge AI inference market where companies have the greatest opportunity to infiltrate the semiconductor industry.
Perhaps the most notable factor here is that emerging companies are advocating the deployment of Neural Processing Units (NPUs), a more power-efficient, more specialized alternative to GPUs. NPUs are designed to accelerate the processing of AI tasks, including deep learning and inference. They can process large amounts of data in parallel and quickly execute complex AI algorithms, using specialized on-chip memory for efficient data storage and retrieval.
While GPUs have greater processing power and versatility, NPUs are smaller, cheaper, and more power-efficient. Counterintuitively, NPUs can also outperform GPUs at specific AI tasks due to their specialized architecture.
Furthermore, the business model that many startups employ and NPUs favor allows them to focus their limited resources on research, development, intellectual property, and market entry, while using capital-intensive chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung to do the actual chip manufacturing.
By focusing on core competencies in chip architecture and driving the development of NPUs, these fabless companies are changing the AI semiconductor landscape and positioning themselves as critical players driving the next wave of technological advancement.
Who attracts the most attention?
California-based SiMa.ai has raised an impressive $270 million to date, with the company’s platform accelerating the spread of high-performance, ultra-low-power machine learning inference in embedded edge applications. Etched, another California company, similarly provides transformer-specific AI-based computing hardware designed to radically reduce the cost of LLM inference.
Texas-based Mythic is now worth more than $500 million, offering desktop-grade GPUs in a chip that runs for a fraction of the cost without sacrificing performance or accuracy. Another company attracting significant interest is Quadric, which develops edge processors for on-device AI computing.
Europe has seen the emergence of promising companies despite the lack of a coherent semiconductor AI strategy. Axelera AI, a Netherlands-based software AI platform to accelerate computer vision in edge devices, announced a €63 million Series B financing in late June 2024, led by EICF, Samsung Catalyst and Innovation Industries.
A cost-effective, energy-efficient alternative
The startups mentioned above have such growth potential because they thrive in areas where Nvidia is vulnerable. NPU edge devices are a viable alternative to GPUs because they address pressing issues of cost, size, and power consumption, with applications ranging from industrial IoT to autonomous vehicles.
Defeating Nvidia’s might will be no easy task, but with larger tech giants like Microsoft, AWS and Google actively pursuing or looking to acquire AI chip technologies, a market consolidation is on the horizon that could upset the balance of power.
