Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti seems to be outselling both AMD RDNA 3 GPUs

Nvidia’s new RTX 4070 Ti GPU has sold more than both of AMD’s high-end RDNA 3 graphics cards combined, according to new sales stats.

As video cardz (opens in new tab) spotted, sales numbers from German retailer MindFactory were posted on Twitter by TechEpiphany (who regularly shares stats from this major outlet), showing what happened in week three of 2023.

And it was a big win for Nvidia in terms of current generation models, with the RTX 4070 Ti selling 545 units. That turned out to be more than the RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT combined, which shifted 300 and 200 units respectively (500 in total). Notably, the 4070 Ti was also the best-selling single GPU of all models from AMD, Intel, and Nvidia.

When you add RTX 4080 sales to Nvidia’s tally – that GPU managed 190 units – you get 735 units for Team Green versus 500 units for Team Red, a pretty clear win even without the total for the RTX 4090 (which sold 210 units, and that would push Nvidia to not far from selling 1,000 Lovelace GPUs for a week).

Interestingly, the second best-selling graphics card was also an offering from Nvidia, the RTX 3060, which fell not far behind the 4070 Ti, bringing in sales of 485 units.

In third place was AMD’s bestseller, the RX 6700 XT, which shipped a whopping 410 units this week.

What about Intel? Well, Team Blue was way behind the two major GPU makers, with the Arc A770 and A380 picking up just 10 units each (putting them in 21st place with a bunch of other cards, many of them very long in the making). the tooth, such as the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti and the GT 730).

Analysis: the price is right – or at least a little more than the alternatives?

This is an interesting snapshot of current GPU sales, but we should remember that these are numbers from a single retailer, so just a small sample of the overall market. So let’s not get carried away, but it’s obviously very interesting to see the RTX 4070 Ti spew out the combined totals of both of its RDNA 3 rivals.

There are probably a number of reasons for this. First, the RTX 4070 Ti came right out of the gate at its MSRP (recommended price) (instead of getting blown up). And second, that MSRP is tastier than any other current-generation graphics card (all of which are more expensive models, of course). The RX 7900 XT comes in at around $100 (about £80 / AU$145) more for the MSRP – actually at MindFactory it’s just over €30 (about $33 / £26 / AU$47) more, at least at the time of writing, though the gap may have been wider in the week for which these numbers were compiled.

So apparently it’s as simple as if you want a really powerful graphics card – don’t forget that the RTX 4070 Ti offers RTX 3090-level performance, with DLSS 3 for boosting supported games and lower power consumption – this is about as good as it currently gets. You’re still paying through the nose for that privilege, but not as much as with the other current-gen options on the table. (And last-gen cards also remain pricey, even the RTX 3080 is currently only 13% cheaper than the 4070 Ti at MindFactory).

The smart decision, perhaps for now, might be to wait for the RTX 4070 to show itself. This GPU could be passing the rumor mill soon, and maybe we’ll finally get a glimpse of a pretty affordable price with Lovelace (comparatively speaking – maybe we should semi-affordablemaybe, although some speculation suggests that Nvidia is going heavier on the price tag than we’d like).
