A nurse reportedly kidnapped and forced to drive an escaped convict through Sydney has spoken of her terrifying ordeal.

Mother-of-three Rachelle said she was unpacking groceries in her driveway at Little Bay in southern Sydney when a violent fugitive approached her.

“I saw blood on him, so I was pretty scared. He told me he escaped from (Long Bay) Prison,” she said.

He allegedly demanded her car keys, but she refused, so he told her to get in the car and drive it herself.

“I was very scared…he told me he wouldn’t hurt me as long as I did what he told me to do.

“My heart was racing but what was going through my mind was when can I run, when can I run for it,” she shared 9News.

The man charged with Rachelle’s kidnapping is Jason Neil Melbon, who has been behind bars since 2008 for shooting a woman in a carjacking.

The 43-year-old has less than 18 months of that sentence left.

“He said he shot several people, his life was in danger in prison and he just wanted to get out,” Rachelle said.

She managed to escape him after driving 9 miles through the city to Beverley Park.

“I pretty much ran with my key in my top and ran up to it, screaming ‘Help me,’ and then beautiful neighbors came to my rescue,” the mother said.

Police arrested Melbon shortly afterwards when he allegedly tried to break into homes in the area.

He was in court on Tuesday and was charged not only with assaulting Rachelle, but also assaulting another woman and tying her up with power cables.

Melbon was a minimum security inmate doing yard work at Long Bay Prison when he allegedly climbed a fence and ran to Little Bay and allegedly assaulted the two women.

Rachelle said she is “very disappointed with the correctional services for putting me in this position.”

NSW Corrective Services’ Adam Wilkinson said he would like to ‘apologize to the victims involved in (the) incident’.

Melbon was refused bail by the Sutherland local court and will appear in court again on October 12.
