Horror as a toddler, 2, dies after falling down a sewer drain in a remote Outback community
- Toddler, two, fell into a well in the Mt Liebig Aboriginal community
- Kid was flown to hospital in Adelaide but tragically died
A two-year-old child has tragically died in hospital five days after falling into a sewer.
The two-year-old fell into the well on March 29 while on a property in the Mt Liebig Aboriginal community, 190 miles west of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory.
Police said the toddler was resuscitated and stabilized by staff at a local clinic before being flown to Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide.
The toddler tragically died five days later.
The Northern Territory Police Department is investigating the incident.

The child fell into the pit while on a property in the Mt Liebig Aboriginal community, 190 miles west of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory (pictured). Staff at the local clinic used CPR to resuscitate and stabilize the toddler before transferring the child to a hospital in Adelaide
It comes after the Northern Territory’s work safety watchdog issued a warning about septic tanks in August 2022, after a second child fell into an unsecured tank in eight months.
“A four-year-old child fell through a loose lid into a full septic tank after using the establishment’s communal restrooms,” the NT WorkSafe spokesperson said.
“The parent’s child witnessed the incident and was able to save their child.”
An 18-month-old baby was also rescued after falling ‘headfirst’ into a tank through a loose lid in December 2021, before being rescued by an older sibling.
“We were lucky in both incidents that someone saw the event and was able to get the child out,” the agency said.
