Severe weather warning with ‘destructive’ winds of up to 125mph to storm parts of Australia – before a chilly cold front rolls in
- Winds of up to 125 km to hit parts of Tasmania
- NSW snowfields expect to receive winds of up to 100km
- Victoria could see wind gusts of more than 90 km
- Damaging wind gusts develop ahead of the cold front
A severe weather warning has been issued for multiple states in southeastern Australia with ‘destructive gusts’ developing ahead of a cold cold front.
Damaging winds of up to 125km will ravage parts of Tasmania on Sunday morning as the stormy cold front sweeps across the south east of the country, including the Western Tiers, Deloraine and Shefield areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued similar warnings for parts of eastern Victoria where wind gusts of more than 56 miles (90 km) could be expected on Sunday morning – particularly in coastal areas or higher elevations – before receding in the afternoon.

Winds will continue to develop in the extreme east of the state near coastal areas, including a Mallacoota.
There is also a gale warning for the Central Gippsland Coast, East Gippsland Coast and Central Coast.
Winds generally increase in speed over higher terrain and exposed shorelines, making these locations more likely to be at risk of damaging winds.
The NSW snowfields are expected to be lashed for up to 100km, with damaging winds also sweeping across the state’s south coast, central and southern plateau and Illawarra districts on Sunday morning.
Areas that could be affected include Wollongong and Nowra on the coast, as well as Naatoomba, Bombala and Nimmitabal.
The strong gusts are the result of a high pressure system moving across southern Western Australia, while a cold front is also moving across eastern Tasmania.

Surfers, rock anglers and all boat users have also been warned that gale-force winds can lead to ‘very heavy surf’ and big waves along the NSW coastline, including the coastal areas of Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter, namely Seal Rocks and Nelson Bay.
Sydney will be shielded from much of the wild weather with a forecast of partly cloudy conditions and a top of 19C.
The country’s capital will also drop to a maximum temperature of 14C, with wind gusts between 20 and 30 km.
While the northeastern part of the state is expected to largely escape the worst of the wild weather, BOM forecasters have issued a strong wind warning for sea areas of the southeastern Gulf of Carpentaria, Peninsula Coast, Cooktown Coast and Moreton Bay.
Brisbane is expected to be sunny with winds of up to 40km in the morning and cooling to a top of 22C.
Winds will ease over Tasmania, Victoria and NSW in the afternoon as the cold front.
