NSW transport: Wondabyne train station named most beautiful by Sydney commuters

Australia’s most beautiful train station that hardly anyone knows about: secret spot offers scenic ocean views – and it’s only an hour’s drive from a major city

  • Travelers are amazed by a hidden gem on Australia’s east coast
  • Wondabyne railway station has been voted the ‘most beautiful’ in the country

Australians are in awe of a quaint ocean-view station that’s just a 70-minute train ride from Sydney’s CBD.

Wondabyne railway station is on the Main Northern lines in New South Wales and is one of the most inaccessible stops in the country.

The picturesque station overlooks Mullet Creek, which flows into the nearby Hawkesbury River.

It also overlooks mountain ranges in the Brisbane Water National Park, and many traverse the Great North Walk to get the same view.

There are no roads leading to or from the Central Coast location, and travelers should inform Transport NSW officials if they wish to get off at the station and mark the vehicle as if they were waiting at a bus stop.

Even then, Wondabyne’s platform is only one carriage long, meaning people can only get off the train through the rear exit.

Wondabyne station was officially opened on 1 May 1889 and is the only station in Australia not accessible by road.

The station was originally called Mullet Creek because it was built near a quarry.

It was renamed Hawkesbury Cabin in 1889 and renamed again in 1891 after a nearby mountain.

The station is mainly used by locals with boats and bushwalkers due to the lack of street access.

It is essential to note that all passing trains do not stop at the station (particularly the through services to Newcastle) and only the Gosford and Wyong local trains consider Wondabyne an official train stop.

Many locals and travelers alike are “stunned” by the station’s beauty – comparing the stop to Sydney’s Circular Quay.

“I took a walk past Wondabyne a few years ago and it was magical,” said one man.

“There’s nothing nicer than just getting off that train and into nature,” wrote another.

A third revealed: ‘I feel like the Opera House has nothing on Mullet Creek – especially given the peace and quiet in Wondabyne.’

“Despite being very stressed about not being able to stop a train, I really recommend traveling there just for the view,” said another.
