NSW will rename the June public holiday to mark the new reign of King Charles III.

The Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend will be known as King’s Birthday from next year after the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The public holiday is traditionally celebrated on the second Monday in June in most Australian states.

The actual birthday of the late Queen was on April 21, while King Charles turns 74 on November 14.

The NSW government said it was important to recognize the new king, but admitted the name change is fraught with sadness.

“Most people only know this holiday as the Queen’s Birthday for every year of the 70-year reign of the late Queen Elizabeth,” said Labor Relations Minister Damien Tudehope Tudehope.

“It is with a touch of sadness that we have to move to change the name, but it is an important acknowledgment from the new monarch, King Charles III, that the holiday will continue and will henceforth be called the King’s Birthday holiday.”

A law change was needed in the National Holiday Act 2010, so that the name of the holiday could be changed and come into effect on January 13 next year.

Great Britain officially celebrated the event in June with the increased chance of fair weather.

The first public holiday on King’s Day falls on June 12, 2023.

It is still unknown whether Australia will have another public holiday in May next year to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

A public holiday would set a precedent in Australia. When Her Majesty was crowned in 1953, Australians were given a special one-off holiday.

Half a million Sydneysiders took to the shores of the harbor to celebrate the grand occasion, 16 months after she became head of the monarchy – the beginning of a seven-decade reign.

Federal government sources said no announcement will be made at this stage about a public holiday on Coronation Day – although many Australians live in hope. h in commemoration of the royal family.
