New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet has apologized for wearing a Nazi uniform to his 21st birthday party.

During a special news conference Thursday, Perrottet, 40, said he was “naive” and regretted the decision to wear the costume in September 2003.

‘At that time in my life, I just didn’t understand the gravity and pain of what that uniform means to people, not just in our state…but all over the world.

“I am deeply ashamed of what I did and I am truly sorry for the harm and pain this will cause to people across our state and in particular to members of the Jewish community, Holocaust survivors, veterans and their families.

During a special news conference Thursday, Perrottet, 40, said he was “naive” and regretted the decision to wear the costume in September 2003.

“I’m really sorry…I’m not the person I was when I was 21.”

Perrottet said he had received a call from a colleague asking about the costume two days ago and said that although he had not been threatened with reporting it, he wanted “the people of New South Wales to hear it from me”.

When asked why he didn’t open up about the costume sooner, Perrottet admitted that “maybe he should have.”

“There have been times over many years where I’ve thought about talking about it,” he said.

“It’s been a tough thing and the more I’ve been through in life, the more I’ve felt the pain of it.”

Perrottet said he had spoken with Jewish community leaders before Thursday’s news conference.
