A police officer tragically drowned after rescuing a teenager caught in a current at a popular beach on New Year’s Day.

Emergency services were called to Bogola Beach near Narooma on the south coast of New South Wales on Sunday afternoon following reports that lifeguards had pulled an unconscious man from the water.

Paramedics began CPR and tried to revive the man, but he was declared at the scene.

The man, 45, has since been identified as a serving NSW Police officer, who was off duty at the time and was holidaying in the area with his family.

The off-duty hero dove into the water and successfully rescued a 14-year-old boy caught in a current before he was swept back into the sea moments later and drowned.

Local lifeguards rushed to the beach unattended in an inflatable rescue boat in a desperate attempt to save the man, according to NSW Surf Lifesaving.

Police launched an investigation and urged any witnesses to the tragedy to come forward.

It follows a series of tragic drownings in Australia during the Christmas/New Year holiday season.
