A NSW Ambulance paramedic has shared important advice for drivers on how to respond when an ambulance approaches with lights flashing and sirens blaring.
Paul Michael posted the useful tips in a video on social media.
“Now I think it’s really important to teach you what to do and what not to do when one of these babies (pointing to the ambulance) approaches you with lights and sirens.”
Paul said he’s seen a lot of people panic and his simple advice is: ‘Chill. There is absolutely no reason to panic.’
He recommended three things drivers should not do when an ambulance approaches.
“Number one, don’t, and I repeat, don’t hit the brakes and just stop the car. That might be one of the worst things you can do,” he said.
“Second, don’t block all lanes at the intersection. Okay, if you see us coming and there’s a lane open, don’t go into it because we’re going to use it to go through the intersection.”
Paul then revealed his most important tip.

“Number three is don’t go into the intersection. Okay, maybe we have your back. Our lights are on and the intersection is closed because you’re in the front lane or something.”
Paul advised motorists not to sneak into the intersection and said if there is a red light camera they will be booked.
“You’re putting yourself in danger,” he added.
Paul concluded his video with some very useful tips.
“So just relax, calm down and go left.”
‘Just go to the left. That’s all we want. A cute little left-wing fusion. Don’t panic.’
Aussies praised Paul for sharing his tips.
“A much needed video, very clear and sweet,” wrote one.
‘Thank you. This really helps. I was always told to run a red light if there is an ambulance behind you,” wrote another.
‘Hahah driving an ambulance is so frustrating! People do stupid things when they see you, or there are people who don’t see or hear you,” wrote a third.
