NRL superstar Tom Trbojevic has already started preparing for life after footy, securing part-time work as an asset finance broker with iFin Capital Group.

The Manly Sea Eagles fullback, 25, recently completed a commerce degree majoring in finance – and when he isn’t training or playing, he is now working closely with clients for the firm based in Sydney’s CBD.

Trbojevic, who won the Dally M Medal last year and is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, said working in the challenging industry provides important life balance.

He is also following the finance path of his former coach Geoff Toovey, who is a qualified accountant.

‘Turbo’ recently explained why he chose a corporate career as an asset finance broker in an interview with Annie Kane, editor of The Adviser and Mortgage Business.

The star fullback said working in finance provides much needed balance away from his footy commitments (pictured, with Kristi Wilkinson at the NRL 2021 Dally M Awards)

‘Everything started in late 2019, iFin Capital happened to sponsor my junior rugby league club (Mona Vale Raiders),’ Trbojevic said.

‘Their work aligned with what I was studying at university, so we had a chat and I’m very grateful they gave me an opportunity.

‘I’ve always loved maths – since high school – so that’s why I went down this path.’

The fullback also revealed there are similarities in his finance gig to the NRL.

‘It is team based, we work to achieve the best outcomes and communication needs to be effective,’ he said.

‘My focus is always looking to achieve the best outcomes for our clients.

‘Being part of their journey is great, and I knew even before finishing my degree I needed to take that leap and experience everything (as a broker) first hand.’

Trbojevic also stressed the importance of completing courses with Commercial and Asset Finance Brokers Association of Australia (CAFBA), as industry knowledge is crucial.

‘You want to know as much about the industry as possible,’ he said.

‘I remember in a few of my early meetings I didn’t say much as I didn’t know enough at the time.

‘Completing my Certificate 4 in financial services was very important, as was my degree.. it took me seven and a half years to complete it, but in the end I got the green tick.

‘I’m always looking to learn as much as I can.’

Earlier this month, Trbojevic confirmed he won’t play for Australia ahead of the rugby league World Cup in the UK later this year.

He has chosen to focus on getting his shoulder right ahead of the 2023 NRL season, which will delight Manly fans, who haven’t seen their superstar on the field since May after his dislocation against Parramatta at CommBank Stadium.
