NRL star Nicho Hynes says he looks forward to his mother living with him ‘forever’ when she is released from prison on Tuesday.

Julie Hynes, 50, was taken into custody in February after a jury found her guilty of supplying drugs when a family friend died of a heroin overdose at her home in NSW in 2021.

“She will be with me forever now,” the Cronulla Sharks player told Judge David Wilson at his mother’s hearing on Monday.

Judge Wilson said he intends to release Hynes under strict conditions after a hearing that lasted nearly three hours.

“I’m only telling you so you can sleep well tonight and for the peace of mind of your family,” he told the perpetrator who appeared via video link.

Hynes was charged with supplying drugs when Luke Murphy, 29, was found dead in her living room covered in white powder.

The case was to be concluded on Monday. Hynes, however, began the hearing by denying evidence that turned out to be true at trial.

“I was willing to accept that she had a support network and release her into the community,” Judge Wilson said.

“But she seems to have no insight into her transgression. It is a pity that she felt the need to give testimony that was contradicted by very convincing facts.’

The jury in her trial was told that a red hydraulic press with her fingerprints was found in her bathroom.

Hynes returned to the stand after two judge-ordered breaks and admitted she knew the hydraulic press existed and turned a blind eye to the drugs being pressed in her bathroom.

“Push your head in the sand and let it happen?” asked her lawyer.

“Yes,” she replied.

The details of her strict parole will be set on Tuesday, although one of the conditions is that she must live in Nicho Hynes’ granny flat for at least two years.

Outside court, he said he would like to put his mother’s troubled history behind him.

“I’m really happy that I’m past this now and can bring my mom home and take care of her, and put her in a community that takes care of me and will take care of her,” he said.

“I really look forward to her being the generous and loving person I know she is.”
