A rising star in the NRL who nearly died last year after a dastardly hit that left him brain-damaged has landed a two-year deal with the Gold Coast Titans.

The incident was reportedly caused when his ex-girlfriend’s partner, Saiasi Verevodi Qiokata, allegedly ran across the street and hit Spry.

Treymain Spry, a rising star in the NRL who nearly died last year after a dastardly hit that left him brain-damaged, has secured a two-year contract with the Gold Coast Titans.

Qiokata was jailed for a year but was granted immediate parole after pleading guilty to assault causing bodily harm in a public place while intoxicated.

Spry suffered skull and eye socket fractures, as well as bleeding in the brain.

The winger has no recollection of the assault, and the driver was later cleared by Queensland Police of any wrongdoing.

Spry sat out most of last season as he slowly recovered and impressed the Tweed Seagulls in the Queensland Cup once he was greenlit to return.

Now he has the chance to play alongside international stars like Kieran Foran and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui.

Titans coach Justin Holbrook is excited to see what Spry can accomplish on the field this season.

“Treymain is a natural footballer and is the type of player who can make things happen with the ball in hand,” he told the club’s website.

“We think he has a lot to give at the NRL level.

“Treymain’s journey has been cut short, but after some adversity, he is very keen to make sure he seizes the opportunity to play football at the highest level.

“He will continue to work hard on his game and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can achieve.”

Spry made his NRL debut in 2020 for the Gold Coast, scoring one try in five appearances.

He will push to start at centers before the first round with Brian Kelly, Phillip Sami and draft Aaron Schoupp.
